The Black history of Buckroe Beach in Hampton, Virginia is a powerful reflection of segregation, resistance, and community resilience. During the Jim Crow era, Buckroe Beach was segregated, like many public and private spaces in the South. The main Buckroe Beach area was reserved for white patrons. Black residents, however, were not allowed to enjoy its amusement parks, pavilions, or even the main beachfront. In response to that exclusion, Black entrepreneurs and community leaders created Bay Sh
