On May 18, 1980, the volcano, Mount St. Helens, erupted 50 miles north of Portland, Oregon. It triggered the biggest landslide in Earth's recorded history, where 200 square miles of forest were flattened. The ash cloud eventually reached the northeastern United States and 57 people died, making it the deadliest and most destructive volcanic eruption in U.S. History.
